About the Icehotel
Icehotel in the village of Jukkasjärvi, 200 km above the Arctic Circle, has been rebuilt from scratch every winter since 1989. Each autumn, around 30 000 tonnes of ice and snow are harvested from the nearby Torne River and shaped by international artists into a hotel of rooms, suites and a chapel — only to melt back into the river the following spring.
What it is famous for
- The world's first ever ice hotel — completely rebuilt every year as an art installation you can sleep in.
- Art suites carved by sculptors from dozens of countries, each one unique.
- Icehotel 365 — a permanent year-round section kept frozen by solar-powered cooling.
- One of the best places in Europe to see the northern lights and try husky sledding.
Good to know
The classic winter Icehotel is normally open for tours and overnight stays from mid-December until the warmth of spring causes it to melt — usually around mid-April. The year-round Icehotel 365 section is open to visitors every day of the year.
